Biomedical Engineering
Internships and Co-ops

A joint venture between your company and Michigan Tech. Our students get meaningful work; you get many significant benefits.

Our program

Biomedical engineering applies the principles, analytical techniques, and design of engineering to problems in biology, medicine, and related fields.

Our biomedical engineers can help you

  • integrate engineering and life sciences
  • solve high-level problems
  • undertake cross-disciplinary activities

Internships

  • Internships are short-term (usually summer), paid positions at your company for students to work in their academic areas.
  • Work assignments vary and provide a range of training and experience.
  • Internships do not carry academic credit, and students are not required to write technical reports about their work.

Co-ops

  • Co-ops are similar to internships, and work assignments usually last one semester. (Student may complete multiple co-op assignments.)
  • Students earn academic credit and are considered to be in school full-time.
  • All co-op students must write technical reports summarizing their experiences.

Benefits to your company

  • access to an excellent pool of potential permanent employees
  • increased visibility among students for your company
  • the opportunity—without making a long-term commitment—to review on-the-job performance for permanent hiring decisions
  • the potential to increase diversity in your workforce, as nearly 60 percent of Michigan Tech's biomedical engineering students are female
  • the advantage of efficient, effective, short-term employees
  • a strong relationship with Michigan Tech, including access to top faculty and research
  • the opportunity to improve Michigan Tech's biomedical engineering program and insure an effective curriculum to better prepare students to meet your hiring needs

Work with our students

Michigan Tech's biomedical engineers complete an intensive curriculum that emphasizes theory and engineering application to solve problems involving living systems. Biomedical engineers are top academic achievers, and they are motivated, smart, quick learners, and creative.

Examples of our students' work

  • design of neurostimulating leads and headers
  • research of structural biomechanics
  • fabrication of prosthetic/orthotic devices
  • design of a clamping system for augmentative communication device
  • design and prototype assistive technology devices
  • creation of a computer database for inventory of hospital equipment
  • research for new products; market analysis, competition, and tests of existing products

Some employers who participate in our internships and co-ops

  • Baxter Healthcare
  • Kimberly-Clark
  • Ford Motor Company
  • Boston Scientific
  • Mayo Clinic
  • NASA Langley Research Center
  • LifeCore Biomedical
  • Pioneer Surgical Technology
  • Zimmer
  • Medtronic
  • Pfizer
  • Henry Ford Hospital, Bone and Joint Center
  • Challenge Aspen
  • Guidant

Your responsibility is to offer students

  • paid, challenging work
  • appropriate training, orientation, and company expectations
  • active, supportive, on-site mentoring
  • evaluation of student work at the midpoint and the conclusion of work assignment
  • review of student's technical report and sign-off on a proprietary release permitting the University faculty or staff member to grade the document Some companies also provide other assistance, such as travel expenses, housing stipends, or, for international students, visa/permit assistance.

Additional benefits for you

Our professional staff work directly with your designated representative to

  • promote your company on campus
  • post and promote your co-op/intern positions
  • provide on-campus interview space and scheduling
  • arrange for an on-campus contact to answer students’ questions

By participating in the BME internships and co-ops, some of Michigan Tech’s top students will effectively contribute to your goals and success. We will be happy to answer your questions and help you get started.
