By mixing in organic species with a silica sol-gel system, we have been able to create surfaces that facilitate neuronal extension and adhesion. Currently, we are mixing several different agents into the hydrogel matrix for sustained delivery of therapeutics to improve neuronal health and to reduce glial scarring around the implanted material.
