Undergraduates Developing Biosensors

Dr. Keat Ghee Ong’s Biosensors Lab focuses on the development of wireless, passive implantable biosensors for human physiological measurements. Ongoing projects include the design and fabrication of implantable strain sensors for real-time monitoring of compressive forces in knee implants, implantable micro pressure sensors for detecting arterial in-stent stenosis, and implantable chemical sensors for measuring body electrolytes. The wireless, passive sensors developed in this lab are based on two adjacently placed ferromagnetic strips: one magnetically soft and the other magnetically hard. When the separation distance between these two strips varies, the magnetic signature changes within soft magnetic strip.   This change allows for wireless detection of the sensor response by measuring the change in induced magnetic field.



The design of the implantable pressure sensor for detection arterial in-stent stenosis. Changes in ambient pressure deflect the membranes, thus changing the separation distance between the biasing element (hard magnetic strip) and sensing element (soft magnetic strip). This alters the sensor signature allowing remote pressure monitoring by measuring the changes in magnetic field

Graduate student Ee Lim Tan is characterizing the wireless, passive implantable strain sensor. Sensor signal is captured by a coil and measured with a spectrum analyzer.


Undergraduate student Brandon Pereles is fabricating an implantable strain sensor using a CNC milling machine.
The undergraduate students in the Biosensors Lab are working on optimizing the sensor design so parameters of interest such as pressure, force, strain, and chemical concentrations can be translated to changes in the sensor signature.

Undergraduate student Wen Ni Ng is functionalizing the sensor for pH measurement.
